How to check if ChatGPT mentions your business name, step by step
To check whether ChatGPT mentions your business name, ask it the questions a buyer would ask, with web search on, and read whether your business is named. ChatGPT web search works on the Free plan and for people who are not signed in.
- Write the questions a buyer would type without your name in them. Keep any question that contains your name in a separate group, because a name inside the question makes you appear by default.
- Open ChatGPT signed out, or open a new chat, select Temporary and choose Unpersonalized, which does not use memory, custom instructions or plugins. Or open Settings, Personalization, Memory and switch memory off.
- Start a web search by hand: select View all tools, select Search, enter the question and send it. ChatGPT may also search on its own, so an answer without a search is possible.
- Read the answer. Note whether your business is named, which businesses are named instead and whether the answer links to your site. Select Sources, when available, to see the cited pages.
- Run each question a second time and write down the date.
If memory is on, ChatGPT may use saved memories when it rewrites a search query, and it may use an approximate location from your IP address, so your own check can differ from a buyer's. To run these questions daily instead, the button below opens AIclicks' sign-in page, which links to sign-up. AIclicks' 3-day trial needs a card, and the chosen plan is charged when the trial ends unless you cancel first.

Try AIclicks →Reading the answer: mention, citation and rivals
AIclicks defines a mention as an AI engine naming your brand in its answer and a citation as the answer linking to your website as a source. Record each one, plus the businesses named in your place.
OpenAI's help page on ChatGPT search warns that its results and cited sources may be incomplete, out of date or wrong. Treat a cited page as a lead to open, not as proof.
Why one check is not the whole picture
One run is a sample. AIclicks' blog guide says the honest metric is how often you appear across repeated runs, and counts 14 appearances in 20 runs as 70% visibility. Its terms also warn that the same prompt can get a different answer in another run, region, session or model version.
Other assistants answer differently too. Google's documentation says its AI Mode and AI Overviews can show different responses and links, since each may use its own models and techniques. For Gemini, Perplexity and Google, see how to check AI visibility.
Free tools that ask ChatGPT for you
AIclicks' free AI Visibility Checker needs no signup: enter a brand, domain or category and pick up to 5 prompts, and the result shows whether ChatGPT recommends the brand, which competitors appear and which sources are cited. Its free checker's engines are unclear, because its pages list four engines in one place and ChatGPT alone in another.
AIclicks' AI Citation Tracker takes a domain, writes buyer prompts for the category, runs them through ChatGPT with live web search and ranks the sources cited. Semrush's free AI Search Visibility Checker is capped at three uses a day, with no account.
Tracking ChatGPT mentions over time
A short weekly list needs no tool, and a tracker adds a history once the list outgrows the hand check. AIclicks Starter tracks 30 prompts daily on 3 AI models, and its pricing page does not say whether ChatGPT is among the 3 a plan may choose. Its ChatGPT tracker page says each prompt returns a visibility score, a citation position and the competitors named when you were not.
AIclicks pricing puts Starter at $59 a month, billed monthly, as read on October 30, 2026. AIclicks' paid tracking starts with a 3-day trial, card required. Otterly.AI Lite, $29 a month billed monthly, tracks 15 prompts on 4 engines that include ChatGPT.
